Hurricane Katrina Animal Links
Animal related links and resources for the Hurricane Katrina Disaster. Organizations continue to need your help to house, reunite, or adopt out animals. There are also continuing volunteer needs (see To Help). Many Gulf Coast shelters need help rebuilding. They need outside help because their usual donors have lost their own homes and jobs. (Doghero.com does not endorse the following organizations or can tell which is the most deserving. Go to the organization's website for more information.) PETS Petition - You can still view the petetion for the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards (PETS) Act but no need to sign. On October 6, 2006, President George W. Bush signed the bill into law. PETS requires the inclusion of companion animals in disaster planning at the state and local levels. It was approved by unanimous voice vote in the U.S. Senate on August 4 and the U.S. House of Representatives on September 20.
Current Needs & Active Organizations
Animal Rescue New Orleans - Animal Rescue New Orleans (ARNO) is a grass roots organization founded shorly after Hurricane Katrina. The organization still feeding and helping the many stray animals that remain in New Orleans. They continue to need donations and volunteers.
Stealth Volunteers - Volunteers helping reunite pets and owners who lost each other during Hurricane Katrina. You can also visit their forum at Yahoo Groups.
Humane Society of South Mississippi This shelter has rebuilt and is working to save animals and reduce the pet overpopulation in their county. They are also active in emergency planning to prevent disasters in the future. They can always use a donation!
Louisiana SPCA - The Louisiana SPCA has rebuilt since Hurricane Katrina destroyed their facility. They continue to work on the improve the quality-of-life for the animals in the area.
Humane Society of Louisiana - Grassroots shelter working to rescue and house animals continues to need money, supplies, and volunteers. Visit their website for a list of needs and how to help.
Mutt Shack - MuttShack is continuing to rescue and care for animals in the Gulf Coast area. To donate
Mississippi Animal Rescue League - They need unrestricted donations for regular operations and for their building fund. The website also has information for finding pets.
Best Friends Animal Society - Hurricane Relief Fund. Best Friends rescued many animals and continues to operate an emergency animal relief center in Mississippi.
Kinship Circle - Part of a grassroots effort with the Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF) to mobilize help for stricken communities throughout Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Site includes information on this effort plus lists of volunteer opportunities, letter campaigns, where to find pets and shelter director, etc.
Noah's Wish - "Noah's Wish is a not-for-profit, animal welfare organization, with a straightforward mission. We exist to keep animals alive during disasters." Noah's Wish is working in MS and plans to remain until at least November 15.
Tara's Babies - Shelter outside of Payson, Arizona took in 150 dogs from Hurricane Katrina. They need help funding a building for the 50 dogs remaining after finding foster and forever homes for the rest.
Donations Needed -- Pet Rescue
Arizona Humane Society - AHS sent rescue teams to Louisiana and airlifted many Katrina animals to Arizona in Operation Noah's Ark. Website includes information and pictures on their rescue efforts.
Pasado's Safe Haven - Pasado sent rescue teams and assisted emergency shelters in Louisiana, they are also investigating the school shooting. Website includes information on their rescue efforts and other work. (Rated four stars in Charity Navigator.)
Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine - The Hurricane Katrina Emergency Animal Shelter at LSU-John M. Parker Coliseum is now closed. The web site has information on what to do if you have not picked up your pet or are looking for your pet.
Humane Society United States - Donations for disaster teams and continuing relief effort.
Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty Against Animals - Houston received many evacuated animals from the Louisiana SPCA before Hurricane Katrina, and are leading rescue and relief efforts after Hurricane Rita. They need donations to care for the new animals and to help with these rescue efforts.
North Shore Animal League America - The NSAL emergency response team helped local shelters in the southern states and brought back over 200 animals.
United Animal Nations - The United Animal Nations (UAN) is sent its Emergency Animal Rescue Service (EARS) into Louisiana and continues to operate an emergency shelter in Louisiana. EARS disaster rescues are funded by donations and provided free of charge to the affected communities.
International Fund for Animal Welfare - IFAW sent its mobile disaster-relief and response unit to rescue animal victims of the hurricane, helped coordinate relief efforts and provided financial grants to other organizations.
American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals - Disaster Relief Fund to help affected shelters, reunification of pets and their families, and grants. Information to help with behavioral problems with hurricane animals also on the website
American Kennel Club - AKC CAR Canine Support and Relief Fund. "One hundred percent of your generous donation will be used to assist animal victims of natural disasters, such as Hurricane Katrina."
PETsMART Charities - In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, PETsMART Charities is coordinating its efforts with local humane societies and has initiated a nationwide disaster relief effort.
Stray Rescue of St. Louis - Stray Rescue of St.Louis is working with Project Hope (In Defense of Animals) sanctuary in NO. Their needs are listed on the website.
American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF) - They sent Veterinary Medical Assistant Teams to the Gulf Coast. Site includes updates from the field. The American Veterinary Medical Association is matching donations to AVMF, see website for more details.
Washington Animal Rescue League - Private shelter is providing support for shelters in the Gulf States and brought animals back to their shelter in Washington DC. Donations and foster homes/adoptions in the Washington area are needed.
In Defense of Animals - IDA needs donations for transportation, to feed animals and volunteers, and to repair the damage done by the storm at the Project Hope sanctuary. IDA also hopes to build up an emergency animal relief fund so that we will be able to respond immediately whenever disaster strikes. IDA will give any funds that exceed the Project Hope team's expenses directly to the Louisiana SPCA in New Orleans, which has been hit hard by the storm.

United States Equestrian Federation, Inc. - The USEF has established the Hurricane Equine Relief Fund to assist those agencies working directly with the equine victims and refugees from Hurricane Katrina
Lone Star Equine Rescue - As of Wednesday 9/21/05 at 12:00 Habitat for Horses/Lone Star Equine Rescue will be suspending the KATRINA SUPPORT. It has been reported that Louisiana has all the items needed.

Hopeful Haven Equine Rescue Organization, Inc - Shreveport, LA equine rescue group asks "Please Help us assist the ranchers in South Louisiana. Much has been and is being done to help the residents of the afflicted region, but not enough is being done for the folks who have livestock."

Hooved Animal Rescue & Placement, Inc. (HARP) - 501(c)3 non-profit animal welfare society based in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana has distributed over 21,000 pounds of food,along with hay,salt-blocks, water and medical supplies to over 600 animals in Louisiana's Florida Parishes, River Parishes and Southwest Louisiana and South Mississippi after devastating hurricanes Rita and Katrina. New Orleans - The Louisiana SPCA is rescuing pets from owners houses. Owners that they had to leave should call or email and give their name and address and information about where the pet is confined. The hotline number is: 1-225-578-6111. E-mail should be sent to Katrinaanimalrescue@yahoo.com.
American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals - The ASPCA has a hotline (212-876-7700, ext. 4700) for people who want to volunteer, donate goods, or need help with a trapped pet. They also have a list of Temporary Pet Shelters.
Animal Emergency Response Network - Several groups have put together a central source of information on where to find help (foster homes, lost pets, etc.), to sign up to foster, list found pets, and a section for rescue workers.

Memphis/Shelby County Humane Society - Hurricane Katrina Victims can call (901)276-7770 for information on how they can help animals in this time of need -- Temporary Kenneling, Veterinary Services, Food, and Supplies. Also looking for foster homes for hurricane victims and donations.
ABKA Association for pet care service providers - Many ABKA member boarding kennels nationwide are offering free boarding to pets rescued from Katrina. A list of members who are offering this service is posted on the ABKA website.
PetNeighbor.net - PetNeighbor.net has a gallery of pets who have lost their owner during the Katrina Hurricane.
Animal Welfare Information Center, United States Department of Agriculture - List of shelters and contact information by state, also animal rescue groups operating in the area and where to volunteer.
Ferret Association of Connecticut, Inc. - FACT has established a fund to assist animal welfare groups, ferret shelters, and vets care for ferrets affected by this tragedy. The fund is to help provide temporary care or, if needed, transfer to permanent home. FACT will match each $1 donated by 50% for the first $2,000 in public donations. Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter - The Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter has rescued over 100 animals and is urgently asking national pet and veterinarian organizations to bring trucks to the animal shelter in Tylertown, Miss. and take animals to places where they can be cared for.
